Where we hand the car over

Delivery inside the moat is free. We bring the car to the door of your guesthouse or hotel at the time you choose.

Two things sometimes make that impractical, and both are common in the old city: the lane is too narrow to stop in without blocking it entirely, or your accommodation has no parking of its own and there is nowhere to stand while we do the paperwork. When that happens we meet on the open square in front of Tha Phae Gate, on the Moon Muang Road side. It is a landmark every taxi driver knows, there is room to walk around the car, and the light is good enough to take proper condition photographs. Before you rent a car to stay inside the moat

We would rather say this plainly than have you discover it on day two.

The old city is a one-kilometre square of mostly narrow lanes, and it is the part of Chiang Mai where a car is least useful. Almost everything inside the walls is walkable in under 20 minutes. Parking is limited, and much of the street parking that exists is either resident-allocated or fills before the evening.

A car is still the right call if you are using the old city as a base and driving out of it — to Doi Suthep, to Mae Rim, to Lampang, to Pai. That is what most of our old city customers do. It is the wrong call if you are staying inside the walls for four days and want to visit temples. Walk, or hire a scooter.

If your guesthouse does have its own parking, most of the above stops applying and a car is straightforwardly convenient.

The one-way loop and other local rules

The road immediately inside the moat and the road immediately outside it form a one-way loop in opposite directions. Get on the wrong one and you will go most of the way around before you can correct it. Map apps handle this correctly, but they announce turns late, so it is worth glancing at the route before you set off rather than mid-junction.

The gates through the wall are the only crossing points, so plan which gate you need. Tha Phae Gate on the east side is the busiest and the one to avoid at peak times if there is an alternative.

On Sunday evenings, Ratchadamnoen Road — the main street running west from Tha Phae Gate through the middle of the old city — closes for the Sunday Walking Street market, roughly from late afternoon until late at night. Several of the surrounding lanes close with it. If your accommodation is on or near Ratchadamnoen and you are arriving or leaving on a Sunday evening, tell us when you book and we will arrange the handover at a point outside the closure.

On Saturday evenings, Wualai Road just south of the moat closes for its own walking street, with the same effect on a smaller scale.

Parking

There are paid car parks around the moat and near the gates, and free spaces at some of the larger temples during the day. The mall car parks a few minutes outside the walls are the most reliable option if you are staying several days and your accommodation cannot help — many are free or nearly free with a purchase.

The BYD Dolphin is the better of our two cars for the old city. It is genuinely small enough for these lanes and for the older car park bays. The ATTO 3 fits everywhere too, but you will be paying more attention.

Charging

There are no fast chargers inside the moat. The nearest are in the shopping mall car parks and at the petrol stations on the ring roads, 5 to 10 minutes from Tha Phae Gate.

In practice this rarely matters. We deliver the car fully charged and that first charge is free, which covers several days of the sort of driving people actually do from here. When you do need to top up, plan it around a trip you are already making rather than as a separate errand.

Some guesthouses will let you charge slowly overnight from an ordinary socket. It is worth asking before you book — if the answer is yes, you may never visit a public charger at all. Our charging guide covers what to look for.

Handover and documents

The handover takes about 15 minutes. Bring your original driving licence, held at least a year; the driver must be 21 or over. A foreign licence must be accompanied by a valid International Driving Permit and your passport. We cannot release the car without it — not as a policy preference, but because your insurance would not respond to a claim. See the IDP guide for how to obtain one at home before you travel.

We photograph the car together and send you the whole set on LINE immediately. The deposit is ฿5,000 in cash or by PromptPay, and comes back in full on the day you return the car.

Returning

Same place, or anywhere else in the city that suits you better — tell us on LINE and we will come to you. If your return falls between 22:00 and 06:00 there is a ฿200 out-of-hours fee, charged once per rental.
